  • Below you will find information regarding District 66 Strategic Planning and a request for your input on the parent/teacher conference night on October 29th. Have a great weekend!

    Strategic Planning
This year, District 66 will be conducting a strategic planning project to assist in developing long-term goals for our district and schools. The first part of this process includes participation from our parents in a focus group session to help identify the strengths and weaknesses of District 66 Schools.

Parents will be asked to provide input in the following areas:
  • Student Learning
  • Financial Stability
  • Maintained Facilities
  • Highly Qualified Staff
  • Customer Service

All parents are invited to join us in a focus group session on Monday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.

We will begin in the IMC and the session should last about an hour. I hope you are able to join us for this event.

    Parent Teacher Conference Follow-up
Our first evening of parent/teacher conferences just took place on October 29th. Our goal was to invite every parent to a conference with one of their teachers. This is the first time our entire school has used this format for our conferences. Please feel free to respond to this email with your input if you were able to attend. We will use this information to help develop our conference nights in the future.

In a few weeks you will be given the opportunity to request a conference with your child’s other teachers at our December 3rd conference night. This evening will also provide an opportunity for you to talk to our teachers if you missed the October 29th evening.

Below you will find details regarding parent/teacher conferences, Explore Tests for eighth graders, and graduation/eighth grade spring trip information. Have a great weekend!

Requests for Parent/Teacher Conferences

Today (Friday), Lakeview teachers will be sending out requests to all parents for our conference evening on Thursday, October 29th from 4:30-8:30. Teachers will be scheduling their own conferences based on your requested times on a first-come/first-served basis.

Parents that do not request a window of time will be assigned a time and notified by each teacher. Parents will have the opportunity to request conferences with other teachers prior to our second conference evening on Thursday, December 3rd from 5-8.

Explore Test Make-ups

Eighth grade students that were absent this week will make up their Explore Tests on Monday and Tuesday next week.

8th Grade Commencement Ceremony and Trip

District 66 has a long running tradition of a commencement ceremony and an eighth grade trip. These activities are designed to honor and say good-bye to our 8th grade students that will be leaving District 66 and moving on to high school.

This year, students will spend the day cruising Lake Michigan with their friends on the Odyssey. While on board the Odyssey, students will have a dance with a DJ and unlimited food and soft drinks. Upon docking at Navy Pier students will be given time at the Pier and they will return to Lakeview during the late afternoon/early evening.

During the graduation ceremony, we have recognized our top academic students, given special awards for those students that have excelled in specific curricular areas, and recognized students that have shown exemplary skills in leadership and been positive role models for their classmates.

To avoid any confusion later this year, I would like to provide information regarding our commencement ceremony. Individuals will be recognized for the following honors:

Academic Awards
Students earning straight A’s for all three years will be called to the stage to receive recognition as “Three Year Academic Excellence” award recipients.

Content Area Awards
The following awards will be presented to students that have excelled in one of the following curricular areas:
· The Mark Smith Memorial Math Award
· The Michael Neumann Memorial Science Award
· The Kristen Biss Memorial Language Arts Award
· The David Sweeney Memorial Art Award
· The Social Studies Excellence Award
· The Leslie Gigious Memorial Athletic Award
· The Matt Gerrity Memorial Athletic Award

Character/Leadership Awards
The following awards will be given to students that have shown outstanding character and leadership skills as role models to their classmates:

The American Legion Award ( two recipients)
The Corey Adams Memorial Character Award
The Illinois Principal Association Award (two recipients)

The “Platform Party”
Up to six students will be selected to participate in the graduation ceremony and represent their class. These students may be asked to give a speech and/or introduce guests and events that take place during the ceremony. These students will be seated on the stage representing their class during the ceremony and join their class after receiving their diplomas. Interested students will receive an application to join the platform party from their language arts teachers in the spring. Any student in the graduation class may fill out an application for these positions. If more than six students fulfill the requirements of application, names will be randomly drawn to determine who the members of the platform party will be. The application will be explained in detail to students in their language arts classes later this year.

Detailed information about our year-end activities will be handed out and discussed with our students around spring break.

Eighth Grade Explore Testing

Lakeview students will be taking the Explore Tests on Wednesday, October 14th. These tests are given to all students that will be attending Downers Grove North and South High Schools and are used as a part of the recommendation process for various classes and programs. I am asking parents to encourage their children to do their best work on these tests as they are an integral part of the programming decisions that will take place before high school registration in January.

Fours tests are given to students in the areas of English, reading, math, and science. The Explore Test is the first in a series of tests students will be taking over the next four years. In high school, students will take the Plan Test, and the Prairie State Exam, which is the Illinois version of the ACT used by many colleges throughout the country.

Detailed information about the test is available at the Explore web site:

Washington D.C. Trip Columbus Day Weekend

Many of our eighth grade students will be traveling to Washington D.C. on Saturday. I have had the pleasure of being a chaperone on this trip in the past, and I am sure those attending will enjoy this outstanding trip. Thank you to our Chaperones Mrs. Jennifer Maass, Mrs. Amy Mesker, Miss Annie Enzbigilis, Miss Joanna Payne, and Mr. Tom Tiede.

Parnent/Teacher Conferences

Lakeview Junior High will have their first parent/teacher conference evening on Thursday, October 29th. This year, all parents will have a fifteen minute conference requested from our staff. One of your child’s teachers will be contacting you to set up a conference time next Friday, October 16th. Conferences are scheduled by each teacher on a first-come/first-served basis. I will send more information to you about conferences in a few weeks.

How do we communicate?

Each year, students have a new set of teachers to work with. At Lakeview, a student can see as many as nine different teachers in the course of a day. This can create confusion for parents regarding who they should be in contact with when there are questions or concerns. Below I have included our methods of communication to you. Attached you will find a document explaining the most effective ways of communicating with us! Generally speaking, your best line of communication is to address issues with staff most directly related to the situation. This eliminates confusion and speeds up the communication process.

The District has developed a communication framework to enhance communication throughout the school community. Effective communication unifies and solidifies a great community. Below are the general guidelines used throughout the district as we communicate with parents and students:

General Announcements

General communication is handled through the district web page, (www.ccsd66.org) as well as teacher blogs. Electronic newsletters are sent monthly from each school. When information needs to be delivered expediently, the Alert Now message system is utilized.

Emergency Event/Notification

District 66 monitors the Homeland Security Office EMnet network for emergency information. Any emergency information to be shared with parents will be disseminated through the Alert Now System that combines both voice and email messages, as well as text messages. Emergency alert information will also be placed on the District website ASAP.

Student Communication

Attendance will be reported through the student management program. Parents of children missing 10 days or more of class without notification may be contacted by the nurse or principal. A letter will also be sent noting the student absence.

Student Progress is reported via progress reports and report cards at Elizabeth Ide. Prairieview and Lakeview use the Parent Connect system to report student academic progress. This information is available to parents on a 24/7 basis. Phone calls will be utilized as needed to inform parents of academic or behavioral concerns. Parent – Teacher conferences will be offered twice during the school year. Individual conference requests may be initiated by parents or teachers at any time throughout the year.

Discipline Issues will be handled by a telephone call and/or written notification if any infraction involves the safety of other students. Such a call will be followed up with a written notice sent home to parents. A parent conference may be required to resolve some discipline issues.

On a final note…
I t was great to see so many parents at our open house last Thursday. I hope those that attended found the evening to be informative and enjoyable. Next month, teachers will be requesting conferences with parents. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 29th for Lakeview parents. This should provide another opportunity for parents to meet and communicate with teachers prior to the end of the first trimester.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome Back!

On behalf of the staff at Lakeview Junior High School, I would like to welcome you to the 2009-2010 school year. I hope that your child has an enjoyable rewarding experience at Lakeview this year. We have had a great first week of classes and I am still wondering what happened to summer!

It has come to my attention that my weekly blog posting as a communication tool to parents was not as effective as I had hoped. Although this has been an excellent method of communicating class assignments and upcoming projects from teachers, it was not nearly as effective in communicating information from my office.

This year, I will be sending out emails to the Lakeview School Community as well as posting information on my blog. I plan on including information that parents will find helpful as well as provide them the opportunity to contact me directly by responding to the email if they wish. Additionally, I hope this will give more parents the opportunity to receive important information regarding our school and community. I hope you find these emails helpful and informative as you plan your busy schedules.

Staff News at Lakeview

We are beginning our school year with two substitutes for maternity leaves. Mrs. Christina Ziccarelli will be here for Mrs. Wagner (7th grade science) through October and Mrs. Kim Froats will be subbing for Mrs. Ohlander (8th grade Science) until January. We would also like to welcome Miss Jennifer Cerney from Prairieview who will be joining us teaching eighth grade language arts and reading.

Although the staff Directory appears to have several new teachers, Weddings were the reason for the new names! Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Boyer (formerly Miss Lepley), Mrs. Mia Crews (formerly Miss Gabriel) and Mrs. Jennifer Maass (formerly Miss Casey) on their weddings this summer.

Lakeview PTO Officers

Thank you to our new PTO officers for the upcoming school year:
Mrs. Theresa Herstowski – President
Mrs. Julie Jones – Vice President
Mrs. Jeanette Burton – Secretary
Mrs. Kathy Seitz – Treasurer

The annual magazine drive kicks off on September 11th followed by our first Market Day on September 12th. Last year our PTO raised $17,500.00 to be used by all of our schools besides funding many student events in all three buildings.

Lakeview Curriculum Night - Thursday, September 10th

Please plan on attending our curriculum night scheduled for Thursday, September 10, 2009. Parents will have the opportunity to follow their child’s schedule and meet their teachers. The evening begins in the gym at 6:45 and is for parents only. The evening will wrap up at 9:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you then!

As always, if you have any concerns or would like to contact me, feel free to call, email, or stop in at any time.

Sincerely,
