Basketball Begins!

Congratulations to ourvarsity basketball teams at the Westmont Rotary Tournament last week. The boys beat Westmont on Friday and the Girls went on to win the Consolation Championship onSaturday afternoon against St. Mary’s. The official opening of our season begins Tuesday, January 17^thwith the girl’s team at home vs. Burr Ridge. All home games begin at 4:00.

Student Council Community Service Project Begins

Our student council will bein a “friendly competition” combining efforts with Prairieview School against Lace and Eisenhower Schools from District 61 beginning this Friday. Cancer Smashers is acommunity service fund raiser in which all four schools will be collectingfunds to help find a cure for this disease. 100% of the money collected will go to the Robert H. Lurie ComprehensiveCancer Center of Northwestern University.

District 66 Spelling Bee

Lakeview will be havingtheir classroom and grade level spelling bees this week. Two finalists from each grade will beparticipating in the District 66 Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 24, 2012. The beebegins at 1:00 and will be held at Prairieview School.

Master Schedule Meeting Follow-up

Thank you to all of theparents that participated in our information meeting regarding the Lakeviewschedule for next year. The staffcontinues to work to develop a master plan that meets the needs of all of ourstudents.

On a Final Note…

After thirty nine years inDistrict 66, Dr. Tiede has announced his retirement at the end of the schoolyear. Congratulations and our bestwishes go out to Dr. Tiede and his family!

Winter Break is almost here – Are you ready?

With the first dusting ofsnow this morning, it has become quite obvious that your children are ready fora break! Our winter break begins at theconclusion of the school day next Friday, December 16, 2011. Classes willresume on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

MAP TestingBegins January 9, 2012

This January, District 66 will begin theirwinter session of MAP testing. This test has been developed by theNorthwest Evaluation Association. The NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests present students with engaging, age-appropriate content. As astudent responds to questions, the test responds to the student, adjusting upor down in difficulty. Additionalinformation about MAP testing can be found at www.nwea.org
Students are able to monitor their ownprogress throughout the year. Homebase teachers will be conferencing withstudents to discuss goal setting on the test when we return from break. Theinformation will be one piece of information used to ensure students areappropriately challenged and/or receiving academic support using appropriatedifferentiation or interventions. Laterthis year, MAP information will be used to assist in therecommendation process for placement.
Map tests will be administered in the areasof math and reading. Results will be availableby the end of January. MAP will be administered again in May.

Is SantaBringing a New Camera to Your House?

If you should happen to upgrade your digital cameraduring this holiday season and don't have any need for your old camera, wewould be happy to take donations of the camera you replaced. We use thesecameras for many projects and we could definitely use them in manyclasses. If you would like to donate yours, please send all cords, cards,and the instruction manual (if available) and have your child drop it off inthe office.

Earlier this year, the sixthgrade teachers piloted a program to sign up for conferences electronically. We are using this program to schedule parentteacher conferences at all three grades in December.

Please follow the five steps below to sign up with as many teachers asyou wish. Remember, conferences areassigned on a “first-come-first served” basis – Don’t wait and miss out onscheduling your preferred times!

· Please click thefollowing link to sign up: http://bit.ly/upWrmS(or, if the link is not active you can copy and paste the link into yourbrowser)

· Click theteacher with whom you wish to schedule a conference and, then, find anavailable time that works for you.

· Once you'veselected the time, click "sign up", you will be asked to create anaccount including your e-mail and a password. (If you already have an accountfrom the October conferences, you can just log in using the same log in andpassword.) Creating an account allows you to receive a reminder just prior toconferences and to change your conference time should you need to do so. Thiswill also allow you to recheck your schedule at a later date.

End of First Trimester Information

Below you will find information about the beginning of oursecond trimester and report cards for trimester one.

This Friday, November 18, 2011, marks the end of our first trimester gradingperiod. Students will begin their secondrotation of Encore classes on this day. Several students will also have schedule changes as they move in and outof RtI classes. Students with schedulechanges will receive a new schedule Friday morning during the Homebase period.

We will not be distributing hard copies of report cardsuntil the end of the third trimester. Final grades and comments for the firsttrimester will be available online through Parent Connect after 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2011.

Parents can access grades by following these simple steps:

It is hard to believe that November is all ready here! Earlier this week we were able to celebratethe successes of our fall sports teams. A special portion of the evening included recognizing our retiring crosscountry coach, Mr. Paul Rodda, as he completed his thirtieth year ofcoaching. Both of our cross countryteams had a fantastic year, with our boy’s team taking third place in the statemeet!

Our Girls JV and Varsity teams went undefeated thisyear. Each team had a 10-0 record andour varsity girls went on to win the SDEAA Conference Tournament. Congratulations to coaches Beth Nyhlen andDawn Wrzesinski! The Lakeview FootballTeam coached my MR. Dave Dvorak finished second in conference this year. A special thanks to our fall cheerleadersunder the direction of Mrs. Joy Defors for cheering on our team for the entireseason.

As we are now in our tenth week of school, we are reviewingour MAP data and comparing this informationto local assessments and academic performance to determine if there arestudents that require additional academic support through our RtI program. Students currently in RtI classes may beexiting and some students may be added to our tier two and tier three readingand math support classes. Teachers willbe contacting parents directly with more information if students will have anyschedule changes at the beginning of the third trimester.

Lakeview Junior High will have their first parent-teacher conference evening on Thursday, October 20, 2011. This year, all parents will have a fifteen minute conference requested by one of their teachers. You will be receiving an email from one of your child’s teachers in the next day to schedule a conference. The following information will be discussed:

This is a special conference night for Lakeview students only. This evening does not replace the full-district conferences held on Thursday, December 1, 2011. On December 1, 2011, parents will have the opportunity to request conferences with any of their teachers. We are hoping that this method of scheduling conferences will give all parents an opportunity to communicate and meet with one of their child’s teachers.

Lakeview Football to play Eisenhower at Downers Grove South “Under the Lights”

Lakeview will be playingtheir home football game against Eisenhower Junior High this Wednesday, September 28, 2011 in thenew stadium at Downers Grove South. All Lakeviewstudents and families are invited to attend. All guests from both schools will be seated in the West Stands and should enter through the main gate at the southeastcorner of the stadium.

Besides the Spartans andGenerals football teams, the evening will feature cheerleaders and a pep bandfrom both schools.

Gates open – 7:00 p.m.

Game Time - 7:30 p.m.

Student drop off and pick up information

We havebeen working to ensure students are safely dropped off and picked up by parentswhen they are coming to school for early activities or being picked up aftersports practices. There has been a notedimprovement in the morning and immediately after school, but we are stillhaving difficulty keeping the parking area safe after sports activities. Please take a moment to review theinformation below regarding dropping off and picking up students:

Student Drop-off Before School

If you aredriving your students to school in the morning please pull forward all the waypast the storage sheds.

Do not stopat or east of door #6. You will back up traffic into the bus lane and block thedriveway.

Student Pick-up After School

If you arepicking up students after school and have arrived early we ask that you park inthe parking lot to wait for your children.

Do not parkin the driveway that runs towards the east, past entry door #6. This has created a dangerous drivingsituation making it unsafe for students and parents.

If you arepicking up students for after school activities, we also ask that you park inthe parking lot to wait for your children.

On behalf of the staff of Lakeview Jr. High, I would like toinvite all parents to attend our Curriculum Night on Monday, September 12, 2011 From 6:45 to 9:00 p.m.

The evening will begin promptly at 6:45 p.m. in the gym with information about how the eveningwill run and some brief school announcements. After the meeting, parents will follow their child’s class schedule andmeet his/her teachers. Schedules will bedistributed during homebase period at 7:00 p.m.

OUR CURRICULUM NIGHT IS DESIGNED FOR PARENTS ONLY.

Please ask your child who their homebase teacher is as thiswill be the first classroom you will be visiting. Copies of your child’s schedule will beavailable from the homebase teacher.

Because parents will be following their child’s classroomschedule, it is important to arrive promptly at 6:45 p.m.

Welcome Back!

Students have had a very busy start to the school year at Lakeview. On our first day, much time was spent reviewing procedures to help students have a smooth day through “Cool Tools” developed by our PBIS team. Thing went very well and students appear to be well-prepared and ready for the new school year.

MAP Testing
This year, District 66 will again be monitoring student progress using MAP testing. This test has been developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association. Fall Sports Information

Our fall sports activities are ready to begin. In order to participate on a sports team, all students must have a sports physical on file in the office prior to tryouts. Below is a list of fall teams and their tryout dates for this year.

Girl’s Volleyball – 8/29 & 8/30 - 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Boys Football - 8/29 & 8/30 - 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Fall Cheerleading – 8/31 3:00-5:00 p.m. & 9/1 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Cross Country – No Tryouts – practice daily from 3:00-5:00

Welcome to the First Week of School!

Dear Parents,

I hope you are ready to begin another school year. The Lakeview teachers and staff are looking forward to meeting their students for the 2011-2012 school year.

This is a reminder that our open house is scheduled for this Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Bus schedules will be available at this time. Students that need to purchase a new Lakeview reversible PE shirt may do so during open house. The cost of the shirt is $14.00

A few student schedules have changed at each grade level to accommodate new students and balance classes since schedules were made available online to parents. If you have printed a schedule through Parent Connect earlier this month, please check your schedules to see if there have been any changes. Accurate schedules will be available for all students at our open house this Wednesday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. They will also be available in the morning on our first day of school.

Students taking the bus will be dropped off at about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. We will begin our day at approximately 7:45 with all students in the gym. Students will be dismissed by their Hombase classes form the gym to begin the day.

Parents that are driving their students to school are reminded to drop them off in the back of the building and not stop or drive through the bus lanes. Please pull up as far as you can (past the hallway doors at door #6) when dropping of students to prevent a back up of cars blocking the bus lanes.

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the teachers and staff at Lakeview Junior High, I would like to extend an early welcome to all of our sixth grade parents and students. I hope you have had a relaxing summer thus far. It is hard to believe July is almost half over! Below you will find some information I wanted to share with you before school starts.

Sixth Grade Student Open House
A special open house for sixth grade students will take place on Friday, August 19, 2011 from 9:00 to 11:00. Students will have the opportunity to walk through their schedules, practice opening their lockers and tour the building. PE shirts will also be available for purchase for $14.00.

Open House for All Grades
Our Lakeview open house for all grades is scheduled for Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 9:00-11:00.

Mail-In Registration Now Being Accepted
Mail-in registration can be dropped off at Prairieview School now through August 3rd. A drop box is located inside the front entrance. (Walk in registration is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th from 2:00-7:00 p.m.)

Student Schedules
Student schedules will be available on-line in early August via parent connect. Parent Connect passwords will be mailed the first week of August with directions to access student schedules.

8th Grade Final Information

Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

As we wind down the school year there are a few pieces of information I wanted to share with you. The Odyssey Boat Trip was a great success. All of our students did a great job of representing our school and the class of 2011. Thanks to our eighth grade teachers, Mrs. Liles, and Dr. & Mrs. Tiede for their assistance as chaperones.

Graduation- Thursday, June 2, 7:30 p.m.
Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. Students and parents should enter through the main doors by the flag pole. Graduates will assemble in the New Gym and audience members should go directly to the Old Gym to find seats. At the conclusion of the ceremony, graduates will come to the lobby to meet their friends and families.

Graduation Composite Photos Still Available
There are a limited number of photos still available. Students that did not purchase class composite photos may do so by bringing $10.00 to the main office.

On a Final Note….
It has been a pleasure getting to know your children over the last three years. The transformation students make from sixth to eighth grade is amazing. The elementary students that came through the doors three years ago are about to move on as young adults in high school. I wish all of our graduates the best of luck!

Goal Setting Meetings at Lakeview

Homebase teachers will be conferencing with students throughout the week to discuss personal goals regarding our final MAP testing sessions. Map tests will be administered testing the areas of reading and math and are scheduled for the week of April 25th. Most testing will be completed during social studies classes on Monday and Tuesday of that week. The purpose of the goal setting meeting is to review fall and winter scores and discuss and establish a reasonable personal goal to strive for on the final MAP test of the year. Each student’s goal will be different because the goal is based on their personal performance. Following MAP testing, students will re-visit their goals with Homebase teachers to see if they were able to meet their goals. We are hoping some goal setting with teachers prior to testing will help ensure students are doing their best work on the last MAP test of the year. Any words of encouragement you can offer to your children would be extremely helpful! Have a good week!

Academic Excellence Reward and 2010 Honor Roll
The Illinois State Board of Education has recognized Lakeview students and staff for earning Academic Excellence Status for 2010. A total of 459 schools across the state earned the award last year. To earn an Academic Excellence Award and be placed on the 2010 Illinois Honor Roll, Lakeview met the following criteria:

Lakeview made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as outlined by No Child Left Behind requirements for the last two years
Ninety percent of students met or exceeded state standards in both reading and math for the last three years
Ninety Five percent participation rate in state assessments for all students in each subgroup;
An overall attendance rate of at least Ninety percent

7th Grade Science
Mrs. Sarah Wagner will be leaving Lakeview at the conclusion of the week. Her Family is relocating making it impossible to complete the school year. Our best wishes go out to Mrs. Wagner and her family!

Miss Kari Hopkinson will be taking her place for the remainder of the school year. Kari is a certified science teacher that has student taught and worked as an instructional aide at McClure Junior High in Western Springs. She has also worked in District 66 as a substitute this year. Seventh grade students will be receiving more detailed information from Miss Hopkinson in class. She will be here to meet the students and transition beginning Wednesday this week.

Winter Sports Banquet Thursday March 24, 2011
A banquet honoring our sports teams and cheerleaders from the winter JV and Varsity seasons will be held Thursday evening. If you need information about the event you can email Mr. Dave Dvorak, Athletic Director, at ddvorak@ccsd66.org

Graduation Information Coming in April
A packet of information regarding our eighth grade end-of-the-year activities will be distributed shortly after spring break. Mrs. Liles will meet with the eighth grade class and go through the material prior to sending it home. You will be receiving an email the day it goes home so you know watch for the packet.

Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 7:30 in the Lakeview Gym.

Spring Break
Spring break officially begins at the conclusion of the school day on Friday, March 25, 2011. Classes resume on Monday, April 4, 2011. I wish safe travels to those of you getting out of town during our break.

DGS Eighth Grade Orientation

Parents of our eighth graders are reminded that high school orientation night will take place next Monday, January 31, 2011, at Downers Grove South. The evening begins at 6:30 and will run until about 9:00. A detailed schedule of the evening was included with the registration packets mailed to you in December.

Lakeview “Pack the Place” Nights set for February
Our annual week of school spirited events begins next Wednesday, February 2, 2011 with our first “Pack the Place” basketball game. The boys will host Butler at Lakeview. Activities begin at 3:00, concessions will be available, and the game starts in Gym 1 at 4:00. The Girls game will be the following Wednesday, February 9, 2011 vs. Eisenhower. I hope you can come out and support our school.

She will be in communication with Mrs. Mastny to ensure the curriculum is consistent and aligned to expectations.

Cross Country Teams Recognized by Darien City Council

The Darien City Council will be reading and presenting a Mayoral Proclamation at their monthly meeting held on Monday, January 17, 2011. The proclamation recognizes the success of the Lakeview Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Teams during their fall season. All parents and students are invited to attend this meeting for the reading of the proclamation. Congratulations to all of our cross country students and coaches Paul Rodda and Mike Urbas on a fantastic season!

MAP Testing

Lakeview will be administering the Measures of Academic Progress beginning January 10, 2011. This will be the second set of data we will be collecting this year. Shortly after we review these results, scores will be sent to parents. We are planning a parent meeting for interested parents in the near future to explain what these scores mean for their children. Students will be assessed in reading and math during this session of testing. There is some very good information about the test available at the NWEA web site under the parents and students tab. This year marks our first experience with MAP testing in District 66. Unlike the Iowa Test of Basic Skills previously administered, MAP tests are given three times a year to examine the growth of students throughout the year. The MAP test is able to measure a student’s achievement and academic growth, independent of grade, across time.

Spelling Bee Information

Lakeview will hold grade-level spelling bees on Friday, January 14, 2011 during science classes. Students will be receiving information and word lists from their teachers early next week.

Students that win in each class will move on to our building-level spelling bee the following week and winners will attend the District 66 Spelling Bee on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. The District 66 Spelling Bee will be held at Prairieview School.

Mrs. Crews will be out of the building for her maternity leave. Our best wishes go out to Mrs. Crews and her family. Wesley Gabriel Crews was born at 7:21 a.m. on December 17, 2010. We will see her back in the classroom after spring break.

Hello Parents,

As winter break quickly approaches, I wanted to take a moment of your time to highlight some things that will be happening over the next two weeks.

Winter Break Schedule
Our winter break begins at the conclusion of the school day on Friday, December 17, 2010. Classes resume with a regular school day on Monday, January 3, 2011.

Holiday Concerts
Lakeview will be presenting two Holiday Concerts this week:
Tuesday, December 7th, Choir, Concert Band, and Jazz Lab Band. On
Wednesday, December 8th, we will feature our Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Symphonic Band.

Mr. Tedeschi, Mr. Ohlsen and Ms. Berman will be presenting a holiday program for our students on Friday, December 17th. Best of luck to all of our performers!

Junior Varsity Sports Season
Our JV Basketball season is quickly coming to a close. There are three home games left this season:

Several of the performing groups from Downers Grove South will be presenting a holiday choir performance for our students on Thursday, December 16th at 9:00 a.m. Many former Lakeview students participate in these groups at DGS, and it is always nice to see our alumni as they get us all in the holiday spirit!

8th Grade Ballroom Dance – Friday, December 17th, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Our eighth grade students have been participating in a ballroom dance unit in their P.E. Classes. The culminating event of this unit includes a ballroom dance for all of our eighth graders on the last day of school before break. The P.T.O has always helped make this day a special day for our eighth graders by bringing in treats and snacks for our students that day. If are willing to bring in some snacks or chaperone, please contact one of the following chair people coordinating the event:

One More P.E. Note!
Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD) awards banquet to receive the Blue Ribbon Award with our physical education staff. Lakeview was one of three schools recognized (along with our neighbors from Gower Middle School) in the State of Illinois earning “Blue Ribbon Status” for an outstanding PE program and curriculum this year. Congratulations to our PE Staff: Mr. Tom Dodd, Mr. Dave Dvorak, and Ms. Elizabeth Nyhlen for their hard work and achievements!

Eighth Grade Explore Testing

Lakeview students will be taking the Explore Tests on Wednesday, October 13th. These tests are given to all students that live in District 99 and may attend Downers Grove North or South High Schools. They are used as a part of the recommendation process for various classes and programs. I am asking parents to encourage their children to do their best work on these tests as they are an integral part of the programming decisions that will take place before high school registration in January.

Fours tests are given to students in the areas of English, reading, math, and science. The Explore Test is the first in a series of tests students will be taking over the next four years. In high school, students will take the Plan Test, and the Prairie State Exam, which is the Illinois version of the ACT used by many colleges throughout the country.

Washington D.C. Trip Columbus Day Weekend

Many of our eighth grade students will be traveling to Washington D.C. on Saturday. I have had the pleasure of being a chaperone on this trip in the past, and I am sure those attending will enjoy this outstanding trip.
